One and a quarter
I grew up with pre-decimal coinage, so I know the five-pence piece on the right is the equivalent of a shilling, or twelve old pennies.
That makes the old silver threepenny on the left worth a quarter of its modern cousin.
I didn't even know I had it. I suppose every home has its quota of miscellaneous stuff awaiting a decision as to what should be done with it. This coin was in a bag of stuff my Dad inherited from his mother, who lived to 102.
I'm nowhere near 102, but I'm beginning to find 5p pieces difficult to handle, scrabbling in my purse to pick them out. Lord knows how I'd have managed with these threepenny bits. Maybe people had smaller hands in those days.
