Forecourt price wars?

I’ll be keeping a closer  than usual eye on petrol prices in the coming weeks, after weekend predictions that the price of a litre of unleaded is set to tumble below £1.
According to weekend reports it could be before Christmas, and if it does it will be the first time it’s been that low in six years.
That still doesn’t compare with the prices some of us were brought up with, but in present times it is a welcome turn of events.
The predicted fall on the forecourt follows tumbling wholesale prices.
According to the RAC it usually takes about two weeks for falling wholesale prices to be reflected at the pump. And that they reckon could see the price of a litre below £1 before Christmas.
Around here the average price of unleaded is currently around £1.07 a litre and this Sainsbury’s filling station is one of the lowest in the area.
Another 2p or 3p off would almost certainly spark a price war on the forecourt, and you can bet your life that the major supermarket petrol stations will be fiercely competing against each other.
If and when that happens, the mainstream fuel stations will be forced to keep their prices in tune with the supermarkets.

Weekend predictions seemed pretty certain it is about to happen any time, yet the unknown factor is just when. Is it too much to hope it will before I next need to fill up?
