A tribute to Belgians

... was needed today. So I had a good excuse to make Belgian fudge cake (I have no idea if it is actually a Belgian recipe, but that's what my mother called it).

Since we've been living here I have had occasion to meet quite a few Belgians, of both the Wallon and Flemish variety, including our friends F and B. One thing they all have in common is a fantastic sense of humour -- that is to say it's very close to British humour, wry and self-deprecating.

During the Brussels lockdown at the weekend, the police asked people not to post anything about what was happening on social media using the #BrusselsLockdown tag, for safety reasons. So Belgians being Belgians, the tag was swiftly swamped with hilarious cat photos, in order to bury any updates that were actually on topic. The police thanked them this morning with a tweet of a bowl of cat food. The world needs more Belgians! As long as they are not Johnny Hallyday (who like most famous Belgians is considered to be French) -- desperate for publicity, he claimed that if he wasn't a singer he'd go and fight ISIS.

Edit: although Johnny's dad was Belgian, he was born in France, so  he isn't actually Belgian. In fact the Belgians demonstrated their good taste by refusing his citizenship application a few years ago, when he was looking for his roots a tax haven.
