The Weald
Our expected visitor today took ill and couldn’t come. What to do with a brilliant sunny but cold day, unexpectedly free? We decided on a visit to the Devil’s Dyke north of Brighton, a favourite from the time we lived near Guildford in the 70’s. Spent many happy hours with our young son, slipping and sliding on the chalk tracks, now the South Downs Way. We took a picnic of the food we would have served our friend, and had a royal feast with a fabulous view.
The information board says you can see the whole of the Weald on a clear day. This picture was taken in front of the Devil’s Dyke Hotel and Restaurant, where we will have lunch next time, looking along the north scarp of the South Downs at Truleigh Hill, on the left. I think the village below is probably Washington, a place to explore on our next visit. The second distant hill behind is Chanctonbury Ring. On the far right just visible in the mist is the Hogs Back, below which is our old house and some dear friends. Happy memories and a fab time today too.
Late Edit: on further investigation, the village of Washington seems to be on the main road and this little village is more likely to be Poynings!
