Sluice
It is said that the fens are one of the areas of the country that are unlikely to flood as, although they are at sea level or below, the water levels are so well managed with the dykes, washes and pumping stations. Some of the dykes are wide and youngsters are tempted to dive in in summer. They harbour hidden dangers, reeds and rats and the associated Weil's disease. In winter, the dykes are a hazard to motorists on untreated road and many are the cars that have slid into them.
