Life through the lens...

School Days

Built in 1875, and designed by Lockwood and Mawson, the architects behind Bradford's Town Hall.
It cost £1200. and accomodated 700 children. The foundation stone was laid by Mrs John Hague, wife of Lord of The Manor, on July 4th 1874.
Drighlington Primary School has been empty and derelict for 10 years.
It was where MrC went to school as a boy, and also where his mother, and her sisters went as children.
So this morning we went along to an open day, to see how this lovely old grade two listed building had at last been brought back to life.
It has been converted to 9 apartments, but still retains lots of the old character of the building, and from the outside looks just the same, except for the addition of some new doors.
We were both very impressed.
Nice to see the clock working again, as this was a memorial to Mike Hudson. A much loved head master who died in service.
So glad it has not been pulled down, and a supermarket been built in its place!

Extra photo shows the school in 1903.
