Living in Manchester

By Theboysmum

E is for........

Exhibition centre.

This is Manchester Central an exhibiton and conference centre.
It used to be called GMEX and is housed in what used to be Manchester Central Railway Station.
It was built in the late 1870's and was closed as a railway station in 1969.
Midland Railways used to run express trains from here to London.
Trains also ran from here to the Trafford Park Industrial Estate, an old fella I used to look after, Eric, was a train driver working out of Central Station.

I watched the Judo here when the Commonwealth games came to Manchester in 2002 and both Labour and Conservative party's have had their conferences here.

The building is MASSIVE and there is a really cavernous car park beneath it with arched brick ceilings.

Other A to Z's here
