Autumn Colors

It might sound surprising, but the first thing that caught my eye in this scene was not the blazingly beautiful colors of the vines, or the vineyard plots marching up the hill, but the green  grass coming up in the newly plowed field at the end of Wildwood.

I was beginning to think that we would never have any autumn colors, but they have suddenly appeared almost overnight. Now I sit writing as the sun is going down and the lowering light is positively glowing through the oak trees and flaming the tops of the  tall poplar trees across the street next to the newly greening field. The approaching dusk is stunning but short lived.

It was windy as I drove to the paint store this morning, and golden gingko and brilliant red maple leaves were dancing across the street ahead of me. In the garden the red capped woodpeckers are stuffing acorns into every crack and crevice they can find, closely followed by the grey squirrels who appear to be removing them. The goldfinches are especially golden and mimic the falling leaves as they wait amongst the wine colored leaves of the plum tree and fly to the feeders.

We've only had one decent rainfall lately, but it was enough to bring up some grass on the hills, in the fields, and even in our front lawn, which we had given up for dead. I've tried many times to photograph it, bit have never succeeded in getting a decent shot. Maybe if it returns to its former glory I'll be motivated to try again.
