'A Good Year For The Roses'

My song choice today was going to be something quite different, but leaving Christchurch this evening we stopped in at a friends place at the edge of town and were greeted by a mass of roses. And so my song choice was made.

'A Good Year For The Roses' is a country song that I first became aware of through Elvis Costello, so for me his 1981 version is the one I hear in my head. However the song was a Country hit for George Jones in 1970. The song is what some may consider a typical country lyric - it's told from the point of view of a man whose wife is about to leave him. 

At least the dog hasn't died though...  Sorry Country fans, I couldn't resist! ;-)
