UV or not to UV?

I still had my UV filter on from last Saturday when it was stridently bright (yet still failed to take a decent portrait)

The digital SLR experts have put me right on UV filters in portraiture, and instructed Irkutsk on how to make a light box to photograph his minerals.

I think we need a longer visit if our photographic skills are to improve.
