Lower Whitewater Falls

This is the waterfall we hiked to see yesterday. The closest we got was at the observation platform.  Hiking in we crossed over the Whitewater River as it comes down from North Carolina (and a second waterfall). Hiking out, we crossed another bridge where we could see the top of this falls where it fell over the mountain.  It was roped off and not really accessible..which is probably good as some person may be stupid enough to try to cross the river and fall 400 feet!  This waterfall is one of the highest in the eastern US.

Upper Whitewater Falls located just across the state line in North Carolina is the highest waterfall in the eastern US.  It can be seen from a lookout platform that a half mile from the parking area and then is 150+ steps down (and of course, you have to go back up!).  But it is well worth the trip. You can walk to the top of this waterfall from a trail that is accessible from the highway.   I will be going back in the early summer as the area is full of mountain laurel and rhododendron bushes.   A photo of the Upper Falls is in the extras.
