Red-naped Sapsucker--with lots more Red
We were in Madera Canyon at Santa Rita Lodge (Arizona) late this afternoon. This red-naped sapsucker doesn't have full adult plumage (except the red crown), and thus I suspect was hatched earlier this year. He (?) stayed on this perch for over thirty seconds, eating berry after berry, while I took 43 shots--this was clearly the best pose :)
Earlier we spent ca. two hours further south, at Peña Blanca Lake--quite birdy, with most notably a close great blue heron, but there was nothing as picturesque as this.
