Confused

I have learned that the courgette (currently my only 'active' seedling) produces male and female flowers and it is the female that turns into a courgette, but still not sure how you tell which is which.
Having said that, it appears I am growing some sort of Mr Whippy ice cream and not courgettes at all, or perhaps I am just yearning for flaming June to get a wiggle on...
