Dad - 1944

Dear Diary,

I've always loved this photograph of my dad in 1944 taken just after he was inducted into the Army.  I love it because it shows him, the man on the right, without his ever present glasses.  And there is a story behind that.

Dad tried to enlist when Germany invaded Poland in September of 1939.  I'm sure he felt a connection to the homeland of his parents but he was rejected due to his eyesight.  He tried different towns but the answer was always the same.  Five years later it was a different story.  When America entered the war they drafted him!

Today is Veteran's Day and a day to honor all men and women who have served, and continue to serve, their country.  I wish there were no need for armies of any kind but that is not the kind of world we live in unfortunately.  I am very proud of my father, my brother who served in Vietnam, and my nephew who now serves.  Three generations of men to put their country first.  I will forever be thankful to them all.  I think this country should do so much more for returning soldiers and their families.  They sacrificed so much for us;  it is our duty to do all we can for them.

Caring for veterans shouldn't be a partisan issue. It should an American one. - Jennifer Granholm
