Neston Rock Cuttings

I went for a walk on the Wirral today for a spot of geocaching. The first part of the walk took me along the Wirral Way, specifically Neston Rock Cuttings.

This was formally the Birkenhead Railway Branch Line that ran from Hooton to West Kirby. It closed to passenger traffic in1956 and freight in 1962 and became a country park in 1973. At the time it was converted to a footpath this section along the cutting had been used as a landfill site and twenty lorry loads of rubbish had to be removed to get it back to trackbed level.

Along this section you can see pickaxe marks where the cutting, which is half a mile long, was cut out by hand.
