The Air Force arrives at School
We had great excitement at school today as the Air Force arrived in two helicopters and landed on our school field. Our caretaker had mown the field yesterday, so all the cut grassed flew up in the air when the copter was about to land. Rather spectacular.
All the students and their teachers came out to watch the copters land. Two light terrain Army vehicles arrived to keep everything secure - they had machine guns with soldiers poking out the roof of the vehicle.
The soldiers were very friendly and allowed our students to sit in the helicopters, and hop in the light terrain vehicles. They even let an older student start up the vehicle, much to his delight!
After about 45minutes, the helicopters started up, and eventually headed back to Westport. It was a fantastic display for the students - not one they see everyday.
Just out of interest, one of these helicopters cost $19million each! A rather expensive peace of machinery.
This afternoon there have been armed soldiers walking down both sides of the main street. Quite a sight for the public passing through our wee town, and for the locals.
Have a look here if you would like to have a look at some of my other photo's from this morning's Air Force visit.
