Through the Window

I was stuck in our English room, well not literally, but physically needed to be there. So before any students showed up, I took my camera to the window. Traffic was backed up from the stoplight a few blocks down the road, a perfect opportunity to snap a few shots.

Among more interesting news...remember how I mentioned we've got bugs? And usually they stay downstairs...well, I spoke too soon.

In my room that night I heart some taps on my wall. I looked up to see a cockroach, longer than my longest finger and bigger than two fingers put together. (You know it has to be big if you can hear it walking on your wall! Ewww!) Occasionally I have small bugs in my room. They get squished with a tissue, and there's no problem. HOWEVER, this one was way to big to spend the night. "Oh no, you cannot be in here." I indented to say to myself, but it probably came out with sound.

The dilemma was, if I smashed it, it would fall onto my bed, guts and all. New plan needed. I grabbed a empty container and a few papers. Standing on my bed, I quickly captured him in the container and slipped the papers over the opening. One good thing about doing this with big bugs is that they can't escape out the tinny hole as you slide the paper next to the wall.

Up until this point, the operation had been fairly quiet. But then as I was stepping off my bed, bug in hand, out of the corner of my eye I saw a big brown scratch in the wall which I thought for a second was my bug friend intruder. At that point, a squeal escaped from my throat, and the girls in the rooms around me asked what was going on. Luckily I made it out of my room without falling off the bed or dropping my package.

I stood in the hallway for a second, with my Thai friends looking on, undoubtedly amused, trying to decide what to do with him. Into the squatty potty he would go. He wasn't so keen on that idea though. I chased him around the bathroom for a bit with the shower sprayer until he landed in the water and got a swimming lesson.

In two years of being in this room, this was only the second roach (of the big size) to come visit, so I guess that's not so bad. And this time, unlike last time, I got rid of him on my own. I still do a double take with that paint scratch on the wall though. :)
