the dead end
from an album of photographs taken in Ypres in 1927 by my grandfather.
this is 'the dead end' of the Ypres Canal.
in August 1918 the British 33rd Division was relieved by the US 30th Division in the Canal Sector Ypres-Lys Offensive.
B.T.D. took many photographs during WW1 and fought in the Battle of Passchendaele, but I chose this one for its scenic and peaceful quality. he returned to Ypres frequently to remember his fallen friends and men.
