311/365: Britannia

Taken in Trinity Leeds this afternoon - it was heaving!

The sculpture represents the role of women during the war. Many worked in factories making ammunition. In 1916 an explosion at a factory in Barnbow killed 35 women.

In 1918 women over 30 and who owned property were granted the right to vote, partially as a reward for their work during the war. Very few of the new voters worked in industry.

This sculpture represents a different view of Britannia, holding a Barnbow shell and standing on a Mark V tank, she symbolises the militancy of the Suffragettes and the work of women in the war effort.

Funny day weatherwise. Some times it was throwing it down, other times it was glorious (like in this photo!)

I met a rescued hedgehog called Andrew today too - only in Leeds! :)
