Postcard from Christchurch
I did the back blip for Thursday of the Iris Garden this morning if you would like to see the beautiful Irises.
That collage just about took all morning. This afternoon I thought I better have a walk around the city to catch up on wants happening as I haven't been into the city for a while. Tomorrow I am going to be out for most of the day with my youngest son. It was such a lovely day. It did start clouding over while I was out but was still really warm. I think I got a little sunburn.
The colourful towers you can see in this collage have just recently gone up around the CBD. Here is the blip of the Pink one I did on October 24. They are Tourist Information Towers. These towers are designed to help tourists orient themselves towards major city attractions. They are in response to feedback the City Council was receiving that tourists were frequently getting lost. Each of the towers is a different colour and had relevant images, street names, a map and key destinations with walking times on them. They are landmarks easily seen from a distance so people could visually refer to them as they navigated around the central city.
Since the earthquakes Christchurch has lost 1200 commercial buildings, which is about 80 per cent of the central business district. With many of the landmark buildings having now been demolished, finding your way around the central city can be disorientating, even for locals.
For more information on the Towers.
