When we moved here in 2002, once opened up the steel manhold cover and took a peek at the water filled hole and simply closed it again assuming it was simply another water well type construction used to water parts of the garden - it used to be a commercial garden nursery back in he 50/60s.
Today I had finished digging in the geese pool and wanted to "puddle" it in and fill it. So thought I would take a look at the "hole" which is just 5 meters away. Had to use the tractor frontloader to lift the cover. The water level is about Then in with the pump and what you see in the photo is the result. About one third down there is a normal water pipe probably 1.5" which heads towards the house about 30m away. Right at the bottom is a large drainage type pipe heading towards the hedge (2m) and the neighbouring field. I am assuming that it takes in ground water from the bottom and that at some stage the house was fed by it. One fear is that the pipe could be adding to the amount of ground water in the sump of our cellar.
The water was clear and the geese simply loved the new facility taking to it like a duck to water
Electricity, water, phone, sewage pipes around the property have plagued us ever since moving in. Originally laid in the 60/70s and without any plans or drawings. We seem to dig up or discover something new every year and makes digging around a bit "interesting". Luckily we do hve a good trip switch system!
