I have missed the last few Halloweens in the UK and it now appears that we do things the American way. It's all the rage to ask each other in the office what you will be doing for Halloween. Walking through Notting Hill people had taken it to extremes. Whilst dodging hordes of Hetties and Tristans we could see people had erected spiders 2 metres in diameter and had cobwebs professionally installed across the whole height of 3-storey townhouses. I may suggest that the people of Notting Hill have too much money on their hands.
Christmas lights went up in Ely today. I do struggle with the notion of this long build up as I feel there is plenty worthy stuff to invest time and resources in instead of getting caught up in this extended festive preparation that possibly brings more stress than enjoyment. Unless people find inherent pleasure in roast dinner planning and Internet shopping then I would push for legislation that criminalised Christmas planning until no earlier than Dec 15th ;)
