Postcard from Akaroa
Back blip from Saturday
We went away to Akaroa for Saturday night and we didn't have any internet as the motel where we were staying had patchy reception and I couldn't manage to get on line. And to top things off I came down with a really bad migraine. I still feel a little bit under the weather so that way I didn't put up a blip yesterday.
It was a spur of the moment thing to go away for the night so that was way I never said anything. Apart from the Migraine it was lovely to get away for a short trip. The wind was really cold on the Saturday but the sun was showing its sunny face to us. Sunday was much warmer.
Akaroa is about 75 kilometres from Christchurch and is a historic French and British settlement nestled in the heart of an ancient volcano. Akaroa is Maori for Long Harbour. The village is snuggled into a wide bay on the eastern side of the rugged harbour with Onuku Marae a little further south.
There is plenty to do and see around the area. Akaroa waters are home to the rarest and smallest marine dolphin and all around you will find fantastic sea kayaking in spectacular surroundings. There are cruises, sail boats, cycle tours, mail runs, and an excellent range of walking tracks.
