Sharm

We flew over the mountains where the Russian airliner crashed yesterday and the view was spectacular and nerve wracking made more so by the very long glide path into Sharm so we seemed to be flying over the mountains forever at what looked like 3,000ft above the tips. (In my dim and distant past I used to fly).

One reason for this could be an economy drive on the part of the airline to save fuel by reducing power. Whatever. For a nervous passenger looking out of the window those mountains seemed awfully close for a very long time…

Nobody mentioned the crash. The woman sitting next to me said: “If you didn't take a risk in this life you wouldn’t do anything.”

Sharm may be the new Blackpool but we are staying in a hotel well away from the main resort near the Old Market.

It was already dark when we checked and it seemed very quiet .  Most of the voices we hear are Russian ones.

Egypt depends on tourism and the recent shooting of Mexican tourists by military aircraft who mistook them for terrorists while they were crossing the desert does little to restore confidence.

We will not be taking any trips across the sand dunes.
