A relic of transition
Yet another of Beeching's relics; this bridge once carried the Rugby to Stamford railway line across the River Avon and in doing so across the Leicestershire / Northamptonshire county border as well. It is situated close to the M1/M6 Catthorpe Interchange where significant upgrading of the junction is underway. The fact that the location of this disued bridge is only metres away from one of the most important motorway connections in the country reminds us of the mindset Beeching was likely in; to bedragle the railway network in favour of enhancing the roads and cutting many towns off from strategic connections.
The structure is also one of many interesting bridges that connect the county of Leicestershire to its neighbouring counties, not least the nearby Catthorpe Viaduct carrying the M1 from Northamptonshire. Intriguing for me as I've long been looking for that moment of transition
