The Ouseburn.

We had a trip to the Ouseburn this morning. This is a tributary of the River Tyne, near the centre of Newcastle, in Byker.
In times gone past it was a busy place, with lots of industries, such as glass making, brick making, and a cattle sanatorium, where live animals coming into the port of Newcastle were kept in quarantine, until they were deemed fit to be sent to market. There was also Ballast Hill , which was a burial ground for non-conformist migrants from Europe. It is said that there were more burials in Ballast Hills than in all the churchyards of Newcastle.
Now it is a peaceful place to walk, and visit all the small businesses that are there. There are many artists of all kinds, studios for singing, acting and recording. There is a city farm, and the well known Seven Stories book world for children, as well as a couple of pubs that have live entertainment some times.
It has so much life and still a lot of areas to be developed.
These are boats that are moored there, where men seem to spend their spare time 'pottering'. I don't know if they ever get to sea.
It is our 47th wedding anniversary today, so we are having a nice day spent together and a celebratory meal this evening.
