Garleton Castle and Hopetoun Monument

A drier ride to East Lothian this week. Still a nice 95km bike ride. I rode out along the coast to Gullane, and then headed inland to Drem and Athelstaneford. On my way to Haddington, I took this photo.

Garleton Castle was built in the 16th Century. A Seton family residence, it consisted of three accommodation blocks inside a fortified wall. It was used until the mid 18th centrury and it fell in to ruin The remains of the castle now form walls of a pretty substantial farm cottage. There are also farm cottages to the north of the castle, on the right of the castle,  which were also built from the castle's stones.

The Hopetoun monument on the hill on the right was erected in 1824 in memory of John Hope, 4th Earl of Hopetoun (1765–1823).[1] The foundation stone was laid on May 3, 1824. There is an inscription on the monument which states:

"This monument was erected to the memory of the Great and Good John, Fourth Earl of Hopetoun by his affectionate and grateful tenantry in East Lothian. MDCCCXXIV"

At Haddington, I continue up hill to Gifford before heading west back Home through Dalkeith. and Gilmerton. Some lovely autumn colours on the trees. I could have spent a long time photographing the scenes I passed through, but I might not have made it home.
