A Streetcar
I think I've just about got the different types of public transport here figured out.
This is a San Francisco streetcar.
They are from the late '30s and what we would call a tram in Australia.
They also have a trolley bus which is similar with the over head electricity supply but doesn't run on rails, just ordinary rubber tyres.
The famous cable car is powered by a cable just under the road surface.
The downhill cars help to pull the others up the hill.
These have several distinct disadvantages:
They cost $7 a ride so are mainly used by tourists and the wait is often 45 mins to an hour. (The others cost $2.50, $1 for seniors).
Of course we took one the first day here and I can report they are also quite uncomfortable.
Yes, we went up the Coit Tower as mentioned yesterday.
It turned out there was lift and you weren't even allowed to climb the 200 steps to the top (just the last 45).
However, we did climb 445 steps from the waterfront to the base of the tower!
Surfgirl asked me to blip our Air BnB so I have included one in the extras.
We just have a room in a private home here but it is about as big as our whole apartment in New York.
They do vary a lot but we have found all most satisfactory and considerably cheaper than hotels.
