Salomons Welte Organ
I attended a Marriage Blessing here, my friend Jane & her Husband Stephen celebrated their Marriage here.
Shame we didn't get to look around the grounds & see the spectacular views.
Situated just two miles outside the spa town of Royal Tunbridge Wells, Salomons Estate is a stunning Victorian mansion, designed by the acclaimed architect Decimus Burton. Set in 36 acres of rolling gardens, parkland and woods, it enjoys an enviable location in the heart of England’s garden, yet within an hour’s travel of Central London.
Retaining all the elegance and romance of the Victorian era, the estate offers a spectacular venue for weddings, events and conferences, plus the perfect setting for Sunday lunch, afternoon tea, or an unforgettable night out.
The Science Theatre houses one of the finest Welte player pipe organs ever installed in Britain. It is in fact one of only two operational instruments of its type left in the world. During his residency Sir David Lionel Salomons installed no fewer than three Welte pipe organs in the estate. The first was a No 4 Concert Orchestra, followed by the larger No 10 Orchestrion with 700 pipes which was installed in 1914 at a cost of £4,050, a considerable amount at that time.
The Welte Organ is unique in that it has always been in situ in the Science Theatre, this outstanding example of a private Victorian theatre is largely untouched by time or cosmetic modification. To walk into this superb building is a breath taking experience as one is immediately aware of its almost cathedral-like atmosphere. In 2003 the organ was fully restored with the help of the Heritage Lottery Fund and is now regularly played.
