Autumn shades

Another shot of this beautiful sycamore in the school playground. A friend told me that apparently trees leaves turn red not because of the sap drying up but because the tree pumps a different chemical into its leaves. Scientists apparently don't know why the tree does this. My question would be ' why then are there some autumns where the colour is much deeper?'.
