Seed Head
Still feeling decidedly bunged up today so took a walk on the Shapwick Heath Nature reserve to see if it helped clear my head. At least 2 bitterns were "booming" clearly and I was fortunate enough to see one standing on the edge of a reed bed - through a high power telescope that one of the many twitchers there today kindly let me look through. This was the first time I've seen one standing in the classic bittern pose like this, although one did fly across our path when we were out cycling here last year. The main focus of the twitchers' attention was the 3 Great Egret chicks that recently hatched, but there was no sign of them and, as my 50mm lens isn't up to long distance bittern shots, I went to the opposite extreme for this close up of a seed head.
