Coming down from High Spy above Rigghead Quarries.

Last day at the cottage, but not the last day in the Lakes. When we leave here we head for the Borrowdale Hotel for a couple of nights then travel over to Harrogate for two nights while I do a bit of work at Wetherby Young Offenders Institute on Tuesday.

Strong winds this morning, we were debating whether the weather was good enough to go up on the Fells. We've wanted to climb Catbells for a while, having seen it many a time from Friar's Crag on Derwentwater. I think I've been over Catbells before, when in my late teens or early 20s, I'll have to consult my slide box when we get home.

There was a bit of a breeze on top to be sure. Came at you from all directions, back, side, front, quarter and on occasions died away altogether. At times it blew you off course and sideways making it a challenging walk. But safe as the ridge is broad and wide.

We walked over Catbells,Maiden Moor and High Spy coming down via Rigghead Quarries to the Cumbrian Way, past Castle Crag to Grange were we enjoyed a late tea and daily scone. It was then a 45 minute walk back to the car along a route that gave stunning views over Derwentwater and Skiddaw beyond.
