Oakham – Butter Cross with All Saints’ Church
Today we (wife and I) met with my brother and his wife and Oakham was chosen as a venue as it is equidistant between our homes. We started with coffee in the Market Place and then a gentle wander onto the High Street.
On the way we passed today’s blip. The Butter Cross is shown on Speed's map of Oakham, 1611. Once dairy products were sold here and since it was a cross, preaching would occur. All Saints' Church has a fine 14th century spire, crowned by Cock Peter, is a landmark all around. A church and priest were mentioned at Domesday and the first church would be wooden with a stone church being built in the 13th century.
On the High Street a little retail therapy was undertaken by our wives and as this was quite strenuous it worked an appetite for lunch. We were well looked after in The George Restaurant. Finally a visit to Lands’ End outlet shop rounded of our day…
