Old and New Advocate's Close

I read that the development of Advocate's Close in the Old Town of Edinburgh has won the Best Project of the Year in the Royal Institute of Architecture awards. From Princes Street it looks totally out of character with the Old Town Skyline and I often wondered how the planning permission went through. Close up I guess it could be called imaginative and innovative but I'm not sure yet.....
