Who is that Masked.......
This is the first time I’ve photographed a Masked Lapwing or as we call them a Plover. This fella was fiercely protecting a chick along with its partner and two further chicks.
They are pretty large and a fairly common ground-dwelling Australian native bird.
It’s sporting a pretty cool yellow wattle that covers most of its face and you can just see that it’s equipped with a thorny yellow spur, evidently, sometimes used in battle.
The chicks were difficult to photograph as they were so well camouflaged on the gravel, I guess that’s why Mom and Dad were guarding them there and they did carry on a bit, when I got too close.
My second image shows a close-up of its intensive stare and amazing face!
