Back to the future

It is the day that has been waited 26 years for, the moment the real world finally catches up to the future world imagined in the second film of the time-travelling movie Back to the Future. But we still need roads.

In the morning I participated one of the best lectures ever! In the main auditorium of the University was a lecture about social aspects of bar dancing. Researcher Antti Maunu spoke about the findings of his dissertation and  dancers Sini Vainio and Linda Kuha interpreted the message by means of modern dance. Very interesting and fun lecture, or actually a show.

The study shows that average young adult Finns' partying or their way of life more generally cannot be characterized by a clear-cut shift from collectivism to individualism. Instead, both moralities are well represented. On the one hand, their world is strongly collectivistic: they do not want to be self-sufficient individual atoms but prefer strong and binding communities. On the other hand, the world of average partygoers is individualistic. They are independent and autonomous actors, and they want to choose the course of their life by themselves. However, they use their personal freedom and competence to pursue strong and binding social experiences. The reason for this is that without active pursuing their life-world does not offer such strong feelings of togetherness. In other words, the partying of young, average Finns satisfies social needs their everyday life does not otherwise satisfy.
