Fresh Air

Eastbourne Redoubt Military Museum

Thought I'd take a trip to see the Redoubt before it closes for the winter. My Art Fund pass gets me in free.  The extra blip shows the parade ground from the ramparts.

But the story of Fritz Haber had me riveted. A German Jew, he received the Nobel prize for nitrogen fixing which led to the development of fertilisers.

However his chemistry expertise led him into the development of lethal gases, Zyklon B and mustard gas. His wife, Clara, also a distinguished chemist tried unsuccessfully to dissuade him from applying science to war, and committed suicide with Fritz's gun.

The next odd development was that many years later mustard gas led to the development of the drugs used in chemotherapy.

What a story!
