Weeping Window

As we were in Newcastle, we decided to visit the poppies at the Woodhorn Museum, Ashington.

Weeping Window is a cascade, comprising several thousand of the handmade ceramic poppies, seen pouring from a high window to the ground below. It was interesting to see this in the context of the mining machinery that is part of the museum and it has been very skilfully done. It has attracted a lot of people, although very quiet today.

Whilst it is good that people, who couldn't make it to London to see the original installation, can have a glimpse of the poppies, I could not help thinking that so much of the impact of the original is now lost. I suppose that the drama then lay in the sheer number of poppies and it was the knowledge that each one represented an individual life . . . lost . . .that had such an impact on everyone who visited. I don't think you would have heard then comments that I heard today - 'That's nice.' 'Don't they look pretty.'

Anyway, worth seeing, and the museum is somewhere we have never been to and will certainly return to.
