Sunday Blast

Wow. This is the way to get a kick out of Sunday afternoon on the water. Just took a trip to the foreshore at Eling on Southampton Water, attracted by the throaty roar of an engine delivering bursts of power out on the water.

This combines the sense of speed with being on the water — and opens the door on the watersport world of power and excitement with jet skis.

Officially they are known as personal watercraft, although better known as jet skis. With capital initials, these two words are a brand name for craft made by Kawasaki, but to most of us the name is loosely given to any of these machines.

Strictly perhaps the term accurately describes the aquatic motorbike, which in effect is just what it is.

Even the Royal Yachting Association acknowledges the jet ski saying if you love speed and being on the water, this is the perfect activity for you either independently or with a friend.    Although training is not compulsory, it even runs a personal watercraft course to pass on the skills you need to handle this sort of craft safely.

Then of course, there are many clubs which provide the chance to improve your skills.

There are a number of places in Southampton Water and the Solent as well as other parts of the coast around the country which provide handy launching places.

Who knows, before long you could be blasting across the water like these two already experienced jet skiers.
