New nose
Yesterday the surgeons made a new jaw out of a fibula. Today they took a rib and made Nimo a new nose. She had had NOMA as a child and survived, but the disease had eaten away most of her mouth and all of her nose.
The rib is cut into pieces to make a long nasal bone and a strut. Two pieces of cartilage are shaved off for the outer edges. The framework was then covered by a skin flap from her scalp.
