Regular readers will know that I like to visit Moore Nature Reserve. Today when we went there we walked over to the adjacent Upper Moss Side, an area which lies between Moore Reserve and the River Mersey. There are a couple of excellent hides overlooking the marshes. We were afforded great views of a number of birds of prey.

We had hoped to see the Long-Horned cattle that are grazing on part of the marshes but we only saw one rump in the distance. Cattle have grazed here since the 1100s when the monks at the nearby Norton Priory grazed their cattle on this land.

The Long-Horned cattle have been re-introduced as they will graze the grass and vegetation to different lengths which will encourage bird life in the area.

We are so lucky to have such a wonderful place so close at hand.
