Monkey Puzzle trees
Araucaria araucana is an evergreen tree growing to 40 m tall with a 2-m trunk diameter. The tree is native to central and southern Chile and western Argentina.
This tree is usually dioecious, with the male and female cones on separate trees, though occasional individuals bear cones of both sexes.
This avenue of Monkey Puzzle trees in the grounds Bicton Agricultural College, Budleigh Salterton in Devon, was planted in 1844 and at 500 metres, is the longest of its kind in Europe.
It consists of 25 pairs planted in pairs and seedlings from the trees are used to generate replacements when needed so maintaining genetic identity
I have added another scene in the grounds, in Extras
