Cordially mine
Midsummer is the time to make elderflower cordial. Diluted with ice-cold water it makes a fragrant refreshing drink in hot weather.
(Not much call for it at the moment then - hot chocolate would be more in order.)
The elder was revered in 'pagan' times for its magical potency so, inevitably, its reputation was reversed by Christian missionaries. They bad-mouthed it as both the source of the timber used for Christ's cross and the tree upon which Judas chose to hang himself. In point of fact, 'God's Stinking Tree' aka 'Devil's Wood' is too soft and pithy for either purpose. It's true the leaves have a rank odour (it repels flies) but the creamy flowers possess a heady scent that could be judged divine.
