Feasting on thistle

I watched this moth ( I don't think it is a butterfly) for a while today..the thistle is about the last thing blooming here now that has pollen.   I did notice that its wing seems to be torn..the wind was blowing pretty hard so maybe it got hung up somehow and ripped the wing.  But it had no trouble fluttering and flying on this plant.
