hip hop blip

I wish this photo have captured more of the energy of these young men who perform highly acrobatic hip hop dance on the subway.

Lately they seem to show up on at least 50% of the time on the Q which is my 'usual' train.

If you've never come across them (a singularly New York phenomenon, I think?) it is hard to communicate the intensity of the experience with just one photo.

Usually traveling in groups of three or more -with one in charge of handling the boom box (& blasting the music so loud that you can't hear anything else, even with earplugs) -they swing from the metal bars above the seats and it always looks like another passenger is going to get kicked (especially on crowded trains during rush hour!) But I actually have never seen anyone get hurt.

And it all happens incredibly quickly - between subway stops - & they disappear just as fast as they appear - at the next station, out the door & leaping across the platform and onto the next train!)
