Dem Bones

So much to choose from today. A visit in grey skies to the 10th century fortification of Silves. Now much restored on its hilltop setting but evidence if the Moorish then Christian influence on the region.

But this ossuary at Alcantarilha merits the blip. A XVI century creation from a local cemetery is accessed through a small door but is an impressive sight. Many of the skills on the surrounding walls have had thief teeth removed - for false teeth?- but the sight of the crucifix alongside the skulls and bones is startling.
