Modica cathedral

In 1693 Modica and seven other towns in south-east city decided to rebuild themselves completely following a devastating earthquake. I'm not sure how they financed it, but they succeeded in creating complete new streets, palaces, churches and cathedrals all in the latest baroque style. All eight towns now have UNESCO world heritage status.
