Beech combing
I spent the morning in one of the beech woods that has recently been added to the nature reserve. It is a more mature wood than the mixed woods in the old reserve, with some majestic tall beeches and swathes of fungusy-smelling leaf litter. I'm starting to survey the three new woods we have taken on and, at the moment, that means largely fungi checking. The extra photo shows a lovely white oyster-type fungus that I would say was Pleurocybella porrigens or Angel's Wings if I was in Scotland. However, knowing now that this species has hardly spread south and is not known in the south of England, I think I'd better return to check it more carefully.
