Arbeia Roman Fort

We are back in Northumberland trying to visit some of the Roman sites that we didn't see (or didn't have time to see properly) when we walked Hadrian's Wall. Today we drove to South Shields to see Arbeia Roman Fort, a very interesting site including a number of reconstructed buildings. The picture is of the courtyard of the Commandant's quarters - very luxurious and a marked contrast to the cramped spaces that the ordinary soldiers had to live in.

(Our hotel is near Hexham, a converted 14th century castle, and as I type I am drinking a marguerita in the medieval themed drawing room with oil paintings and tapestries on the walls. Very nice.)
