John got his letter. He was still in bed when I arrived at 10.30 but quickly woke and appraised the scene. He seemed genuinely moved to hear from The Queen - even if via a Lady-in-Waiting.

Later he told me he had been trying not to count off the days until I was back. But he seemed remarkably chipper and on excellent form. He'd had a Skype call from his grand-daughter and seen his great grand-daughter on an iPad the day before

Later I went down to the greenhouse in our garden  and was delighted to find so many tomatoes still and some jalapeno chillies after ten days away.  The outdoor Fandango of which I earlier sang praises have blight although some of them may pull through. Squash, leeks and celeriac are all looking good.

The sun was hot and clear in the afternoon and I did a bit of watering.
